Operator Procedures

Fueling Aircraft

We secure fuel through our FBO, Airflite. Fuel truck comes to our hangar upon request, and all our aircraft rates are wet.

Returning aircraft

During business hours: Renter is responsible for tying down or orienting airplane in the hangar upon completion of the flight.

After business hours: With notice, we will provide accessibility to hangar from ramp so that renter may return and secure aircraft.

Getting Reimbursed if You Buy Fuel Elsewhere

Upon return of the airplane, any fuel or oil purchases made elsewhere will be deducted from final bill at checkout.

Mechanical Problems at Another Airport

If mechanical issue is slated to be a same-day fix, then FBO or mechanic at other airport will be provided with payment information from us to secure part or service. Renter is still responsible for return flight as usual. If the airplane will be grounded until the next day or for several days, then we will fund a rental car or flight home for the renter pilot.

Securing Aircraft

We store our aircraft in our hangar. Should we lose that room to owners looking to lease hangar space from us, forcing our own aircraft into the tie downs, there are three adjacent to the hangar and standard tie down procedure with chains and control lock required.

What fuel load to expect and how to change it

Our aircraft’s payloads vary considerably, so we don’t keep a standard amount in the fuel tanks. It is up to the renter to know what amount suits their flight appropriately and call for fuel at their discretion during preflight.

Caution areas where hangar rash is most likely

There is some risk involved in moving our airplanes out onto the ramp, because they are staggered inside the hangar. One must proceed extremely carefully to avoid incurring damage.

Standard departure procedures

When getting clearance, report position at Airflite. KLGB Ground 133.0.

Best Way to Get Flight Following

Request through tower frequency prior to departure or directly through SoCal Approach when handed off.

Local reporting points

Signal Hill, Queen Mary, Queen’s Gate, Breakwater, Vincent Thomas Bridge, Mile Square Park, Goodyear Blimp, Knott’s Berry Farm. *Approaches from the North and East are most likely on Flight Following.

Typical TFR considerations

Angel Stadium to east, Dodger Stadium to the north, Disneyland to the east. 3,000 ft AGL, 3 mile radius. TFRs for sporting events begin one hour prior to event, and end one hour after.

Routine radio position

If using Long Beach practice area, make frequent position reports on practice area frequencies and be very aware of traffic. Heavily congested flight training activity in practice area. Local TAC required.

Preferred VFR "gates' ATC wants you to arrive from

Pilots arriving from northwest through northeast of Long Beach should be familiar with Los Angeles Class B airspace. Monitor ATIS first, then call SoCal App 20 nmi out for VFR traffic advisories.

Local Flight Planning Tips

Noise sensitive areas

Noise sensitive areas all quadrants. No touch and gos, stop and gos or low approaches 1900-0700 weekdays, 1500-0800 weekends and holidays.

Local hazards

Birds in vicinity of airport, intensive flight training area.

Nearby special use airspace

Not in immediate vicinity of field. Consult TAC.

Air carrier arrival paths to be avoided

Be alert for commercial jet traffic climbing or descending SE of Long Beach near Seal Beach, or W thru SW of Long Beach from the 110/405 Freeway Interchange to the Harbor Area.

Best airports to visit in the area

Take your pick! Catalina Island (KAVX), a daunting a beautiful approach. Famous for buffalo burgers made from local island bison. Caution: short, graded runway, downdrafts on short final. Also, Camarillo Airport (KCMA) has spectacular food on field - Waypoint Cafe

Local Airfield Operations

Taxiway/runway incursion hotspots

Four intersecting runways on field. Listen acutely for specific landing or taxi instruction from Tower and Ground. Pilots may be instructed to Land and Hold Short of an intersecting runway.

Run up area

Depending on runway, most run up areas precede runway

Noise abatement procedures

For detailed noise abatement information, contact the Noise Abatement Center on Unicom 122.85 or at (562)570-2635 between 0730-1630 weekdays.

Preferred pattern entries

Winds at KLGB favor use of rwys 25R and 25L. Right pattern entry for 25R and left entry for 25L. If approaching from northeast, request straight-in rwy 25R.

special cautions for flying the pattern

GA traffic here gets heavy. Be mindful of proper sequencing if you are sharing the pattern with several other aircraft.

Where to tell tower you are taxiing to after landing

Request taxi to Airflite.
