What Fuel Load to Expect, and How to Change It

Aircraft normally not fueled after flights; request fuel load before dispatch.

Local Airspace Considerations

Standard Departure Procedures

We are beneath Tampa Class B airspace. For VFR flights expect to tell ground if you want, or do not want, “Class B” handling. Example, “Request Class B to Lakeland at 3500 ft”, or “Negative Class Bravo”. Naturally, “Negative Class B” means you intend to stay out of the B airspace. For IFR departures expect standard instrument procedures. To return, it is possible to enter the PIE class D airspace without contacting Tampa Approach, while staying below the B airspace, but we recommend using their assistance.

Best Way to Get Flight Following

Call Clearance Delivery (often Ground Control, listen to ATIS), after startup.

Typical TFR Considerations

Always one at Disney World. Sometimes below 2000’ over brush fire locations. Often during political visits to state.

Local Airfield Operations

Taxi to the Runway

Unless you taxi to 36R at G or M, or to Rwy 09, from Clearwater Aviation you will cross a runway. You are usually cleared to hold short of that runway, then either cleared to cross or you will need to follow your original hold short instructions. Nothing atypical from a normal airport but this is what you can expect.

Run Up Area

At departure end of each runway

What Does Tower Want You To Do Before You Call?

IFR: “Ready for release”. VFR: “Ready for takeoff”.

Pattern Altitude

Light aircraft 811’ msl Heavy aircraft 1511’ msl.

Airport Restrictions

Scheduled airlines are located on the field. Be wary of the TSA restricted zones on the field.

Local Flight Planning Tips

Noise Sensitive Areas

East of Clearwater Airpark.

Local Hazards

Class B airspace, TPA is very busy and should be avoided. Tall radio towers to north of PIE.

Unique Weather Challenges / Microclimates

Afternoon thunderstorm formation in center of Florida peninsula is typical phenomenon.

Best Airports to Visit Area

St Augustine; Venice; Key West.

Best Sites to See From the Air

All the coastline; VFR corridor over TPA (coordinate with CD), will let you see the downtown, Raymond James Stadium, Busch Gardens, then on to central Florida.

Miscellaneous

Be wary of landing at Cedar Key, is a hard surface, but but the runway is not in great shape, thus not allowing maximum braking effectiveness. That coupled with the short length add some risk. Landings are only permitted on hard surface runways. The Coast Guard has a base here. Lots of C-130 and Dauphin helo traffic.
